Purpose of the Session
This workshop will introduce participants to environmental (heritage) interpretation and explore how this communication framework can be used to create more effective and engaging bird conservation activities, experiences, and educational products.
Background and Rationale
Environmental interpretation is a powerful communication approach that helps connect people emotionally and intellectually with nature and cultural heritage. The National Association for Interpretation (NAI) defines interpretation as a purposeful approach to communication that facilitates meaningful, relevant, and inclusive experiences that deepen understanding, broaden perspectives, and inspire engagement with the world around us.
In the Caribbean, where ecosystems are increasingly threatened by climate change and other environmental pressures, effective communication and public engagement are essential for advancing bird and habitat conservation. Conservation practitioners, educators, guides, and outreach professionals need tools that help inspire curiosity, appreciation, and stewardship for Caribbean birds and ecosystems.
This workshop will encourage participants to reflect on how interpretive techniques can strengthen communication about birds and conservation while helping build stronger connections between communities and the natural world.
Session Objectives
- Define environmental (heritage) interpretation and its application to bird conservation communication
- Practice interpretive techniques useful for communicating bird and ecosystem themes
- Explore examples of bird-related interpretive activities and educational products
- Strengthen participant skills in engaging diverse audiences through interpretation
Session Structure and Format
The session will combine short presentations on environmental interpretation with interactive exercises and hands-on practice activities. Participants will explore case studies and real-world examples where interpretive techniques have been successfully used in bird conservation, environmental education, and ecotourism settings.
The workshop will conclude with a discussion of additional resources, references, and training opportunities related to environmental interpretation and conservation communication.
