Grand Prize: “Puerto Rican Spindalis” Painting
Our Grand Prize is an exquisite original painting titled “Puerto Rican Spindalis” by award-winning Cuban scientific illustrator Arnaldo Toledo. It is one of Puerto Rico’s beloved endemics, locally called Reina Mora. Known for its sweet dawn song and show-stopping plumage, the male Puerto Rican Spindalis is a stunning bird with his bold, black-and-white striped head, fiery-orange neck collar, and bright yellow breast. This exquisite piece of art brings the bird’s radiant colors right off the treetops and into your home. Get your tickets for a chance to win!
This stunning 27×22.5 cm watercolor painting on Stonehenge Aqua paper was part of a special collection commissioned for the American Ornithological Society and BirdsCaribbean joint conference held in Puerto Rico.
In an interview, Arnaldo shared his process for creating this collection:
“I carefully researched each species and made an extensive study of reference material. This was essential for rendering each individual in a way that shows the beauty and life of the bird, as well as precisely draw and paint its field marks and diagnostic details. The pose and attitude of each bird is drawn to set the flow and balance of the composition, while at the same time showing all the splendor of these Puerto Rico endemics.”

Birdwatchers will love the Vortex Razor HD 8×42 Binoculars, a premium-quality, award-winning optic packed with everything you need for stellar field observation. It is rugged, waterproof, compact, and its HD optical system delivers the sharpest, brightest images possible.
