Format
Half-day workshop
Purpose of the Session
This workshop will introduce and refine the Beginner Birder outreach model developed by the Trinidad and Tobago Field Naturalists’ Club (TTFNC). Participants will learn how to design and deliver accessible, engaging birding experiences for beginners and community audiences, with the goal of fostering interest in birds and supporting conservation awareness.
Background and Rationale
The Beginner Birder initiative was developed by TTFNC to re-engage members and broaden participation in birding by shifting focus from advanced, specialist activities to inclusive, beginner-friendly experiences. By organizing outings in accessible locations and emphasizing simple skills—such as bird identification, observation techniques, and habitat awareness—the initiative has successfully attracted new participants and revitalized interest in birding.
This model also serves as a valuable outreach tool for engaging schools, community groups, and the general public. Supporting materials, such as site-based bird guides developed using eBird data and local photography, further enhance accessibility and learning. The workshop aligns with conference priorities in outreach, education, and community engagement, and offers a practical approach that can be adapted across the Caribbean.
Session Objectives
- Introduce the Beginner Birder model and its application in outreach and education
- Share practical approaches for engaging new and diverse audiences in birding
- Guide participants in developing a simple, replicable beginner birding activity
- Explore tools such as site-based bird guides and eBird data for outreach
- Encourage participants to adapt and implement the model in their own communities
Session Structure and Format
This interactive workshop will combine short presentations, group discussions, and hands-on planning. Participants will work in small groups to design a beginner-friendly birding activity, including key messaging, structure, and supporting materials. Where feasible, the workshop may include or connect to a field-based demonstration, allowing participants to experience and refine the approach in practice.
