Overview
Discover the diverse birdlife of southwestern Trinidad, where coastal mudflats, wetlands, and open habitats support an impressive array of species. This trip offers excellent opportunities to observe shorebirds, waterbirds, and coastal specialists, complemented by relaxed forest birding at the renowned Asa Wright Nature Centre.
A highlight of the experience is an evening boat tour through Caroni Swamp, where participants can witness one of Trinidad’s most iconic wildlife spectacles—the gathering of brilliant Scarlet Ibis at their roosting site. This combination of coastal exploration and classic rainforest birding makes for a rewarding and well-balanced short trip.

Accommodation
Stay at Asa Wright Nature Centre for two nights, set within a 1,500-acre protected forest in the Northern Range. The Centre offers comfortable accommodations, well-maintained trails, and outstanding birdwatching directly from the lodge’s famous veranda.
Itinerary Highlights
- July 20 – Day 1: Arrival and Forest Birding
Arrive in Trinidad and transfer to Asa Wright Nature Centre. Spend the afternoon relaxing with birding from the veranda and along nearby forest trails.
Birding Highlights: Tufted Coquette, Copper-rumped Hummingbird, White-necked Jacobin, Purple Honeycreeper, Turquoise Tanager, Channel-billed Toucan, Bearded Bellbird. - July 21 – Day 2: Wetlands, Coast, and Evening Boat Tour
Visit Brickfield and Waterloo for birding in coastal and open habitats. In the evening, enjoy a boat tour through Caroni Swamp, a prime site for roosting Scarlet Ibis.
Birding Highlights: Southern Lapwing, Hudsonian Godwit, Whimbrel, Laughing Gull, Royal Tern, Black Skimmer, Wilson’s Plover, American Golden Plover. - July 22 – Day 3: Oilbirds and Conference Transfer
Morning walk to the Oilbird Cave, followed by transfer to the conference.
