Silent Auction

Bid on unique items and experiences while supporting a great cause.

Silent Auction

The Silent (Not-So-Silent) Auction is a beloved conference tradition and one of the most anticipated social events. While it may be called “silent,” the laughter, lively bidding, and friendly competition quickly fill the room with energy. Attendees can browse and bid on a wide range of unique items, from books and artwork to T-shirts and jewelry, many generously donated by participants and partners.

Beyond the fun, the auction plays a vital role in supporting our community. Over the years, it has raised thousands of dollars for travel scholarships, helping ensure that delegates from across the Caribbean can participate in future conferences.

How it Works

On the day of the auction (July 26), items and bid sheets are arranged on tables for participants to browse throughout the day. Attendees can place bids by writing their name and amount on the sheets, with prices gradually increasing as interest builds. Popular items often attract multiple bids, encouraging participants to return and update their offers.

As the closing time approaches, bidding typically becomes more active as participants make final attempts to secure their preferred items. At the end of the auction, the highest bidder listed on each sheet is declared the winner and may purchase the item.

What to Bring

Think about items you’d enjoy buying for yourself or as gifts for friends and family. Bird and nature-themed items are always especially popular—particularly those with a Caribbean flair or that are unique and not easily found elsewhere.

Great options include field guides (new or vintage), natural history books, paintings, photographs, and other artwork, as well as locally made handicrafts. Practical items like binoculars, field bags, and other birding gear are also well-received. You might also consider specialty goods such as shade-grown coffee, chocolate, or rum, along with clothing and accessories like t-shirts, scarves, beach wraps, pins, and jewelry. Other creative contributions can include ceramics, carvings, ironwork, tote bags, toys, puzzles, bird feeders, stamps, CDs, educational materials, or even experiences like guided bird tours.

Keep in mind that the most successful items aren’t always the most expensive—they’re the ones that spark interest and tell a story. A thoughtful or unique contribution can go a long way, so feel free to get creative.

We encourage all participants to bring at least one standout item to donate—something unique, eye-catching, or meaningful—and to come ready to bid generously. It’s a great opportunity to pick up thoughtful gifts (and maybe a few for yourself) while supporting a worthy cause!

Even if you’re unable to attend the meeting, you can still take part by supporting the Silent Auction. Donations are always appreciated and will be acknowledged on the bid sheets.

If you’d like to contribute, please mail your item(s)—ideally not too large or heavy—by July 1 to:

Jennifer Wheeler
7252 Archlaw Dr.
Clifton, VA 20124-2128

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Jennifer Wheeler at [email protected] and Alexia Morales at [email protected]. Alternatively, if you know someone attending the conference, you may ask them to bring your donated item(s) on your behalf.
